Students made mountains out of sand and we made it "rain" over the mountains to demonstrate erosion.
This week students learned many different map skills including cardinal directions and latitude and longitude. In Science we have been learning about weathering and erosion. On Thursday and Friday of last week we conducted an experiment using 5 different pieces of chalk. Each piece of chalk was put into a "weathering" situation. For example, one piece of chalk was placed in vinegar to represent the acid in rain weathering rocks. Another piece of chalk was scratched with a fork to represent an animal digging up rocks and weathering them. Ask your child what type of weathering had the biggest affect on the rock (chalk). The students are learning about weathering and erosion in science! On Friday we went to Mary Foley to look for signs of weathering and erosion. Students looked for cracks in rocks or asphalt. They also looked for rocks that have changed color due to weathering and erosion. It was so wonderful having students' grandparents in to visit our classroom and join us at Mass! This week we have been learning about the Titanic. For a STEM challenge students worked in partners to construct a boat out of foil. Their boat had to sustain weight. To test this we used glass marbles and counted how many marbles each boat could hold without their boat sinking or letting any water in. The students loved being in the science lab!! |
